Welcome, fellow adulting adult.
We are two millennials of a certain age - Paige and Courtland - who meet regularly to discuss what we are doing, reading, listening to, and celebrating (or lamenting) in our lives. After much deliberation about whether to start a *real* club, we decided to do it both IRL and here on Substack.
In our club, we talk about how our generational position as millennials led us down an inevitable path toward burnout and disenchantment. For Paige, this manifested as getting burned out and quitting her career, all while reckoning with the demands of modern motherhood after having a baby. For Courtland, the disillusionment truly set in after moving to Paris (realizing the dream of living with true community) and returning to the US (just not as good as Paris, let’s be honest) right before becoming a father.
We explore how the pressures of over-optimization and perfectionism intersect in nearly all aspects of our lives as millennials. We seek to construct our lives on our own terms, especially around parenting and work.
Paige does our illustrations. We hope you enjoy the goofy little cartoons!
Along with our recommendations for books, audio, and other media, here are some topics to expect:
Rejecting Over-Optimization: Actively resisting the societal pressures of being "the best" at everything and exploring ways to live without trying to optimize every area of life.
Recovering from Perfectionism: Letting go of the idea that everything in life must be perfectly curated or executed, especially in parenting, work, and personal milestones.
Burnout and Boundaries: Sharing our experiences of burnout, both in professional and personal life, and our attempts to establish healthier boundaries to recover from it.
Parenting Without the Pressure: Figuring out how to raise children in a way that focuses on emotional well-being, connection, and growth, rather than falling back on hyper-parenting or into achievement culture.
Opting Out: Saying “no” to societal pressures to exist, look, parent, work, or do things a certain way. In other words, getting more out of doing less.
